MADDY

THE DOMESTIC ORACLE

a project for

WHO IS MADDY?

In Marcel Proust’s novel “In Search of Lost Time”, the protagonist describes experiencing an intense feeling of nostalgia, after tasting a madeleine dipped in tea. Where he recalls a distant memory of his childhood in Combray, where his aunt would would offer him a piece of madeleine dipped in her own tea.

Being named after this madeleine, Maddy plays a role in illiciting a moment of nostalgia.

Designed in response to an Alessi brief, The Domestic Oracle reimagines a future home product as an intelligent vessel of wisdom and guidance, tailored to users’ personal needs.

Combining all the elements of the core memory that the biscuit tin symbolises, Maddy generates images from the users digital photo archive randomly once opened.

The user has no control over what is going to appear.

I can’t wait to finish 7th grade.
Can’t summer come quicker? Whatever, I’m home now and my mom made my favorite meal today! As I am eating,
I see a blue tin container placed on top of the fridge sweet, sweet, biscuits.
I take this oppurtunity to climb the counters, reaching for the blue aluminium tin.
I finally grasp it.
I open the tin anticipating the sweet smell of sugary cookies.
I look inside with a smile on my face, only for my smile to fade instantly.
A sewing kit. A sewing kit. I shut the lid.
